Alfred Montague Art Print- Ship on Fire
Alfred Montague Art Print- Ship on Fire 1856
Painting part of the permanent collection and on display in the Victorian Gallery at Salford Museum & Art Gallery
Fire was one of the greatest dangers to wooden ships which were laden with highly combustible cargoes. The ship portrayed here has been devastated by fire and is a total loss. The crew has abandoned ship and they cling to the wreckage, awaiting rescue. The rough sea is highlighted by the artist's use of light. It has been said of his work, 'In his sea pieces, soft greens and blues predominate, with misty mystic light'.
