Arthur Perigal Art Print- A Fancy Dress Ball 1828 A2 Print

51cm x 38cm

A Fancy Dress Ball, Manchester by Arthur Perigal the edler is part of the Salford Museum & Art Gallery permanent exhibition.

The 8ft by 11ft “A Fancy Dress Ball” painting is now on permanent display on the ornate Blue Staircase at Salford Museum & Art Gallery.

The ball was held at the Assembly Rooms on October 1, 1828, and was a major social event. Part of the Manchester Festival of Music, to raise money for local charities, it was attended by about 3,500 people and around 300 paid to be included in the painting. The painting was raffled and won by a local man, Mr Peacock, who appears in the painting as the Knave of Hearts. He presented it to Salford in 1852. Also in Salford Museum's collection is a Napoleon Bonaparte costume worn at the ball and depicted in the painting.
